Senate, House adjourn sessions early due to rains brought by Florita

The Senate and House of Representatives adjourned their sessions early on Tuesday due to heavy rains brought by Severe Tropical Storm Florita.

Before adjourning the session, Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri left it to the committee chairpersons' decision if they would push through with the hearings that are scheduled this week.

The Senate will resume session on Tuesday, August 30, since August 29 is National Heroes' Day, a non-working holiday.

The House of Representatives opened its session at 2 p.m. and acknowledged the presence of Singapore's envoy to the Philippines, Gerard Ho, who was in the gallery as guest of Speaker Martin Romualdez.

House Majority Leader Manuel Dalipe then moved to adjourn the session until 2 p.m. on Wednesday due to "inclement weather."

The motion was not objected by those present during the plenary session.

Office work was also suspended beginning 4 p.m., according to the office of the House secretary general.

"Tomorrow, August 24, 2022, only essential personnel or those involved in the committee hearings and plenary session are required to report for work," it said.

Malacañang has suspended work in government offices and classes in public schools in all levels from Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday due to Florita.

The suspension of work in government offices and classes in public schools covers Metro Manila and nearby provinces, including Laguna, Rizal, Bulacan, Zambales, and Bataan.

The Supreme Court also suspended work on Wednesday. —VBL, GMA News
