UP forgoes UPCAT anew for 2023-2024

By GMA News

The University of the Philippines (UP) will still not be conducting College Admission Test (UPCAT) for student applicants for the academic year 2023-2024.

This is the University's third consecutive year of suspending the UPCAT for incoming first-year applicants due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prof. Franciso de Los Reyes, data scientist and UP Office of Admissions director, said that the UP admissions system was constantly undergoing refinement.

"The effect of the pandemic will have to be factored into UP's admission system. Remote learning, suddenly imposed upon teachers and students, would have an impact on teaching, learning, and student performance that would vary immensely across different strata of society and affect the student's chances at UP admission," he said.

With this, UP will retain the UP College Applications (UPCA), an admission score model for assessing student applicants.

The University assured the priority of its ad hoc admissions system is to ensure "excellence and equity" in accepting new students. —Sherylin Untalan/NB, GMA News
