Philippines posts 171 new Delta, Omicron subvariant cases

The Philippines recorded 171 new Delta variant and Omicron subvariant cases based on a report released by the Department of Health (DOH) on Friday.

According to the DOH, 163 BA.5 Omicron subvariant cases were detected as of September 13.

Of the 163 BA.5 cases, 151 came from the Davao Region; six from Soccsksargen; two from Caraga; and one each from the Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, and the National Capital Region.

Four more cases of the Delta variant were detected in the Davao Region, while two cases of BA.4 were detected in the area as well.

Two cases of “other sublineages” of Omicron and 45 cases of “no assigned lineage” were also reported.

Between July 30 and August 30, samples were collected for the sequencing run.

The BA.4 and BA.5 were earlier added to the World Health Organization's monitoring list in March and designated as variants of concern by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control.

In July 2021, health experts said that the Delta variant was the "fastest, fittest, and most formidable version of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 the world has encountered," adding that it upended assumptions about the disease even as nations loosen restrictions and open their economies.

The Philippines on Thursday logged 2,141 new coronavirus cases, bringing the nationwide tally to 3,913,536.

Total recoveries climbed to 3,826,246 while the death toll increased to 62,447 with 31 new fatalities. — VBL, GMA News
