Comelec adjusts calendar for barangay, SK polls amid Congress push for deferral

By HANA BORDEY,GMA News

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has revised its calendar of activities for the 2022 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) amid Congress' push for its deferral.

On Wednesday, the Comelec promulgated a resolution moving the following important activities to new dates:

As stipulated in Comelec Resolution No. 10831, the filing of COCs for aspiring barangay and SK officials was initially set from October 6 to 13 except for October 9 while the gun ban was supposed to be implemented from October 6 to December 12.

The campaign period will still run from November 25 to December 3,2022 and the BSKE is scheduled on December 5,2022.

Last Monday, Comelec chairperson George Garcia said they are considering moving the dates of filing of COCs for the 2022 BSKE, pending the decision on the proposals to postpone it.

Garcia laid out their possible actions if the bill postponing the 2022 BSKE is passed into law. He noted that it usually takes about 15 days before a bill becomes a law and gets published in a newspaper of general circulation.

Due to this, he said the Comelec is now studying the possibility of whether to adjust the date of the COC filing, while Congress has yet to decide on whether or not to postpone the 2022 BSKE.

On Wednesday, the Senate approved on second reading the bill postponing the 2022 BSKE for a year.

The counterpart measure of SB 1306 was approved on Tuesday on third and final reading by the House of Representatives. — BM, GMA News
