MIAA: No damage to NAIA due to Typhoon 'Karding'

No damage was reported at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) after Typhoon Karding wreaked havoc in parts of Luzon over the weekend, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said Monday.

"We are thankful that our preparations led to uninterrupted airport operations save for a few flight cancellations. No reports of power and water interruption as well as injury or damage to people and property was received," said MIAA general manager Cesar Chiong.

The MIAA engineering and operations team conducted a clearing operation at the airport’s airside and landside areas including the runways and taxiways.

Chiong said a few trees leading to NAIA fell due to the impact of the storm but no damage to any property was monitored.

Earlier in the day, airport authorities announced the cancellation of 41 flights due to the inclement weather.

The Airport chief said they are continuously coordinating with airlines for the mounting of recovery and retiming of flights and added that affected passengers have been rebooked to later flights within the day.

As of 11 a.m., the state weather bureau PAGASA said four areas are under storm signal no. 1 as  Karding continues to weaken and move further away from Luzon.

Five casualties were earlier reported from the incident —  all rescuers from Bulacan province, according to San Miguel Mayor Roderick Tiongson.

A spot report from the Central Luzon regional police identified them as Narciso Calayag Jr., Jerson Resurreccion, Marby Bartolome, George Agustin, and Troy Justin Agustin.—Sundy Locus/AOL, GMA News
