DepEd needs P1.1 billion to repair schools damaged by Karding


The Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday said it needed P1.17 billion for the repair of schools damaged by Typhoon Karding.

In a press conference, DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa said 165 schools were damaged due to the typhoon.

“Ang nakikita nating estimated cost for reconstruction or rehabilitation ng 165 schools na ‘to ay P1.17 billion," he said.

Aside from the 165 schools with damage to infrastructure, Poa added that 396 more schools were “totally damaged.”

Also, 92 schools were still being used as evacuation centers for the victims of disasters.

Poa said the Department has been working on acquiring disaster-resilient classrooms through its coordination with the private sector and other organizations.

He said the DepEd would incorporate disaster resilience in the new design of schools with the help of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Meanwhile, DepEd Secretary Vice President Sara Duterte's spokesperson, Reynold Munsayac, said that the VP sent her condolences and prayers to the family of the deceased victims of Karding.

“Lalo na po doon sa ating mga rescuers from Bulacan. Nagpahatid po bulaklak at ng sulat ng conolence ang ating Vice President sa kanilang pamilya,’ he said.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said, as of Friday, 12 people were killed, 52 were injured, and six were missing due to Karding. — DVM, GMA News
