Philippines acquires two helicopters from Turkey

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Friday graced the ceremonial blessing of two "ATAK" helicopters, which are the latest addition to the assets of the Philippine Air Force (PAF).

The Office of the Press Secretary said the two air assets were purchased from Turkey. The acquisition of the helicopters was part of the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Marcos expressed gratitude to the Turkish Aerospace Industries and the government of Turkey for helping in strengthening the Philippine military.

The President also recognized the efforts of the PAF in various aspects including external defense, internal security operations, disaster response, as well as relief operations.

Marcos said the assets would improve the PAF's operational readiness and responsiveness to fulfill its mandate to the public.

He ensured that his administration would fully support the PAF in its vision to become world-class as he also hoped that this recent acquisition would drive PAF "to enhance its defense capabilities consistently, perform its duties effectively and protect the nation with vigor and pride."

The T129 helicopters are manufactured by Turkish Aerospace Industries and are based on the AgustaWestland A129 Mangusta design.

The OPS said the new assets would complement a pair of refurbished Bell AH-1S HueyCobra attack helicopters from Jordan, along with armed light observation and transport helicopters in PAF’s inventory. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
