President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Thursday urged local government units to create a common area for fireworks display to welcome the New Year.

"Ang gawin na lang natin ay I will enjoin the LGUs, instead of allowing our people to have their own firecrackers, gumawa na lang kayo ng magandang fireworks display para sa inyong mga constituent," Marcos said in an interview.

(I will enjoin the LGUs to just create areas for fireworks display for your constituents.)

The President also reminded Filipinos about the dangers and adverse health effects of using firecrackers, particularly those that result from reckless and indiscriminate use of dangerous firecrackers.

"Huwag muna tayong magpaputok at alam naman natin kung minsan delikado ‘yan. Lalo ngayon at maglalabas sila ng mga paputok na hindi natin alam kung saan galing, kung maayos ang pagkagawa,” Marcos said.

(Let's not use firecrackers because they are dangerous. We don't know where did some of the firecrackers came from.)

The Department of Health has said all hospitals would be on high alert for individuals with injuries and emergencies that  occur during the New Year celebrations.

The DOH said that it would monitor hospitals to ensure their readiness to attend to fireworks-related injuries and any emergencies as part of its "Iwas Paputok" campaign.

Then-President Rodrigo Duterte's Executive Order No. 28 provides for the Regulation and Control of the Use of Firecrackers and other Pyrotechnic Devices.

Among the provisions in EO 28 was confining the use of firecrackers to community fireworks displays that would be supervised by a trained person licensed by the police. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
