The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Sunday it recorded one case of indiscriminate firing incident in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro during the New Year revelry.

PNP Public Information Office chief Police Colonel Red Maranan said a civilian was involved in the incident based on their December 31, 2022 to January 1, 2023 monitoring.

“Isang sibilyan ang suspek at siya naman po ay nahuli [ng mga kapitbahay] at agad na naaresto ng ating kapulisan na rumesponde,” Maranan said in a Super Radyo dzBB interview.

(The suspect was a civilian and was identified and immediately arrested by responding police elements.)

“Itong tao na ‘to ay nagpaputok sa kanyang bakuran at naitawag ng kanilang mga kapitbahay, agad namang napuntahan ng pulis at agad naman nahuli,” he added.

(Neighbors identified the person who fired a gun while in the backyard and called the police, who immediately responded and arrested  the suspect.)

Maranan said that the PNP is still gathering information if there are other reports of indiscriminate firing incidents.

He said the agency is on full alert status until January 6 to ensure the security of the public. This means that 85% of the PNP personnel or around 190,000 of them would be out on patrol duty.

“Sa ngayon, wala pong pumapasok na reports sa atin na mga significant incident, maliban diyan sa isang insidente ng indiscriminate firing,” he said.

(So far, we have not received any reports of untoward incidents, except for the indiscriminate firing.)
