MWSS warns of water supply problems if no new source developed

By GMA Integrated News

The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) has warned of a water shortage next year if no new water source is developed soon enough.

According to Mariz Umali's report on "24 Oras", the MWSS said there was already a "supply deficit" in parts of the water concession area.

“If we don't get a new water source or increase in supply, next year talaga magkaroon ng problema,” said Lee Robert Britanico, MWSS officer-in-charge and regulatory office deputy administrator for customer service regulation.

“We have a supply deficit now, not just in the southern part, so in Metro Manila and parts of Cavite and Rizal,” Britanico said.

An official of Manila Water, which supplies water in portions of Metro Manila and Rizal, said it was getting water from the Cardona Water Treatment plant aside from Angat Dam.

The Cardona facility is said to be capable of supplying water in the Rizal.

Manila Water is also rehabilitating at least 60 deep wells.

“'Yung service improvement plan natin for the period 2023 to 2027, this early nakahanda na. At ginagawa na natin even before dumating yung tinatawag na long-term source from Kaliwa," said Jeric Sevilla Jr., communication head of Manila Water.

"This is actually in preparation for the population growth, increase demand, and to avoid any shortage of water in the future,” he added.

Maynilad has several water treatment plants that supply Metro Manila and some parts of Cavite, which includes the Poblacion Water Treatment Plant and treatment plant in Imus and Bacoor.

An official said Kaliwa Dam is expected to be completed by 2027.

“Sa ngayon po sapat na sapat yung aming suplay versus dun sa demand. Ang plano po namin once na maging on stream itong Poblacion, part of its production capability ay irereserba po namin para po may redundancy,” said Engineer Ronaldo Padua, Maynilad water supply operations head. —Richa Noriega/NB, GMA Integrated News
