Group protests in front of DOJ on Bloody Sunday 2nd anniversary

An activist group on Tuesday trooped before the Department of Justice to commemorate the second anniversary of the March 2021 Bloody Sunday incident, which led to the deaths of nine activists.

Among those present was Rosenda Lemita, the mother of Chai Lemita- Evangelista who passed away with her spouse Ariel in Batangas.

“As we commemorate the second year anniversary of the Bloody Sunday raids and killings, we remain steadfast in our struggle and in our call for justice,” Defend Southern Tagalog spokesperson Charm Maranan said in a statement.

According to Maranan, justice remains elusive for the victims.

“Although we welcomed the dismissal of the charges against Nimfa Lanzanas and Ramir Corcolon, these institutions have haphazardly responded to their mandate to serve justice for the victims of Bloody Sunday in the past two years,” she said.

“We call on the DOJ to remain true to its mandate and serve justice to those slain and imprisoned,” she added.

On March 7, 2021, at least nine activists were killed while six others were arrested after police authorities conducted simultaneous police operations in Calabarzon.

In January, a panel of prosecutors of the Department of Justice dismissed the complaint for murder against 17 policemen for the death of labor leader Emmanuel Asuncion in 2021 in Cavite.

Asuncion’s wife, Liezl, later filed a motion with the DOJ asking it to reconsider its dismissal of her complaint— RSJ, GMA Integrated News
