NAIA operations resume after being disrupted by 'lightning red alert'

Operations have resumed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) after a "lightning red alert" halted its flight and ground operations Friday afternoon.

According to Jhomer Apresto's report on DZBB, flight and ground operations were paused at around 1:25 p.m.

NAIA said this is a safety measure to avoid any untoward incident while the "lightning red alert" is raised. Light to moderate rains were being experienced in the area when PAGASA issued the warning. 

Airport operations resumed at around 2:20 pm according to NAIA, after MIAA Airport Ground Operations and Safety Division (AGOSD) lowered the Lightning Red Alert to Yellow.

The Philippines is bracing for super typhoon Mawar, which is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility Friday night or Saturday morning.

In an 11 a.m. advisory, PAGASA said Mawar now has maximum sustained winds of 215 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center, gustiness of up to 260 km/h, and central pressure of 905 hPa. — Vince G. Lopez/  GMA Integrated News
