By SHERYLIN UNTALAN,GMA Integrated News

Three volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Taal Volcano in Batangas in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said on Sunday.

Among the volcanic tremors was a quake that lasted five minutes.

A light vog was also observed at the volcano.

PHIVOLCS said there was still an upswelling of hot volcanic fluids in the Main Crater Lake.

Alert Level 1 remained over Taal Volcano.

Meanwhile, 1,902 tonnes of sulfur dioxide were emitted on September 30.

Voluminous plumes rising 2,100 meters and drifting southeast were seen.

There was also a long-term deflation of the Taal Caldera with short-term inflation at the northern flanks of Taal Volcano Island.

PHIVOLCS  emphasized that it was prohibited to enter Taal Volcano Island (Permanent Danger Zone or PDZ), especially the Main Crater and Daang Kastil- fissures.

Aircraft were barred from flying close to the volcano.

PHIVOLCS warned that the possible hazards from the volcano included:

  • Volcanic earthquakes
  • Minor ashfall
  • Lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas.
