No water shortage seen until end of 2025 — MWSS
The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) does not see any imminent water supply issues for the entire 2025 as the country transitions to hot dry season.
MWSS Acting Deputy Administrator Patrick James Dizon said that during the dry months —March to May— the demand for water usually increases to around 10% to 15% as people use water to cool down amid the extreme heat.
“Pero mga nakaraang buwan, dahil may mga shearline at Amihan, nakapag-ipon ng tubig sa mga dam. Naabot natin target elevation sa mga water reservoirs sa end ng 2024, para ‘di tayo magka water shortage… ‘di lang this summer pero hanggang katapusan ng 2025, eh ‘di natin nakikita ang water shortage,” Dizon said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon forum Thursday.
(Because in the last few months, because of shearline and amihan, our dams have stored enough water. The target elevation of reservoirs was also hit by the end of 2024, so we won’t experience water shortage…. not only this summer but until the end of 2025, we are not expecting water shortage.)
The MWSS official also cited the current water level at Angat Dam —which supplies about 90% of Metro Manila’s and its nearby provinces’ water requirement— which stands at 212.88 meters.
“Higit pa nga ‘yan sa 212 meters normal high water level natin (That’s above the 212-meter normal high water level),” he said.
Moreover, the MWSS official assured the consuming public that “‘di magkakaroon ng taas singil this summer (there’ll be no increase in water rates this summer).”
Nonetheless, Dizon urged the public to be wise and conserve water for the entire year, not only during the hot dry months. — Ted Cordero/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
