Fueled by the services, trade, real estate and construction sectors, the Philippines beat market expectations for 2012 when it posted 6.6 percent Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth for the year —but further economic growth is threatened by slow job growth, analysts warn.

Here is a selection of comments from the GMA News Online community:

crisostomo_ibarra_3 believes there are enough jobs available but that there are not enough qualified applicants:
Madaming trabaho. May panahon pa. Magaral kayo para maging skilled workers. Ang daming pupunuang trabaho sa pinas man or sa abroad. Nasa kamay ng pilipino ang kanilang kinabukasan. Hindi sa pamahalaan. Tumigil sa tambayan. Tumigil kapapanood ng teleserye at kapipila sa game shows. Mga tamad.

Rod Galman agrees with crisostomo_ibarra_3 about game shows. The mentality promoted by such shows, Rod argues, is similar to what election candidates do during campaigns, ultimately offering only temporary help:

nicosan, like crisostomo_ibarra_3, also believes there is no shortage of jobs, but thinks that a considerable number of Pinoys are lazy and dependent on money received from relatives who work abroad:

i'm tired of seeing posts complaining there's no job blah blah... the fact is, there is! a lot of jobs are available... just go to JOBS DB and you will see a lot of listings.. it's just that, people are so choosy or displaying the qualities of "juan tamad". or became so dependent on their relatives who work abroad. and then complain to them saying that they can't find a job here... when actually they are not looking... they are just making up reasons not to find a job because they already receive money from their relatives' remittances...

Ablo believes the different industry sectors must all grow in order to achieve a balance in the economy:

It seems whether the Peso is weak or strong it is bad for the economy. The slow job creation is true. There are industries like the call centers and techno help centers that are growing and needing people but there are industries like the airline and shipping industries that have not grown thus less employment opportunities there. There is an imbalance pretty much like one exercising his biceps so much that he forgot to exercise his legs so, the person is not proportional and correction must be done. This too should happen to our industries to strengthen our economy.

neilabarca gave examples of what he thinks are visible signs of a strong economy:

Ang isang magandang ECONOMIC INDICATOR GROWTH ay makikita sa mga COMMUNITY sa pamamagitan ng;

jerry oabla admits being unemployed in a BPO company, but thinks it's a situation better than being jobless:

Trin wonders whether the country's economic gains in the past year is due to better government or the remittances sent by more OFW's:

Is the economic growth brought by the change of government?? Or is it just because there are more OFW's working abroad and sending money. I hope that can be clarified. anyone??

, in reply to Tin, opined that economic expansion is rather a combination of several factors:

In politics it works like this - when there is good news, everyone claims the credit for it, and when it is bad news everyone blames everyone else for it. The truth is, it is never one factor, but a combination.

Arnel recommends a simplification of internal revenue laws by taxing enterprises only for their gross income:

Mahirap kasi mag negosyo sa pilipinas dahil anytime may changes in business policies in almost all government agencies like BIR, LGU,  DILG &  DTI..

ito ang hinahangad kong pagbabago:
1. Gross income taxation sa lahat na mga negosyante to simplify internal revenue laws and to
plug all tax leaks dahil gross income lang ang babantayan

hustisyasigawko thinks that entry level positions have standards that may be too high compared to the actual qualifications of fresh graduates:

Jomel Brioso points out a "career mismatch" where the demand for work is greater than the supply:

Actually maraming factor kaya maraming unemployed...una na jan yung career mismatch, kulang sa experience and skills, maraming trabaho  pero mas maraming naghahanap ng trabaho (OVER POPULATION). Marami ding maarteng fresh graduate na gusto boss agad.

Ablo thinks jobs should also be made available to the elderly who still seek to be useful:

Agree sa career mismatch, there are a lot jobs offered for call center agents, techno hub personnel, networking careers but how does one handle people who work for the shipping, airline industries? How about people above 50 years old who are seeking employment? These people have the experience and expertise and then the only work available for them are to be sales agents, call agents, or what have you agents.
Once at a McDo restaurant in San Diego, Ca, USA, I ate my meal around 1130 pm, the servers were old people who just wanted to work and be useful and so should it be here. Give equal opportunities to old people as well as improve industries that use specialized skills like in aviation and shipping etc.

King and Constantine react to Filipinos expecting results overnight, pointing out that positive economic growth must first be sustained in order to create jobs:

King:Its funny how people consider themselves experts and yet they think the current ills that affect our motherland can be solved overnight. We need to have this level of growth continuously to be able to create a scenario at which the job creation can match the growth of new graduates or outpaced it to really bring down the jobless percentage.Check China's record and see how many years for them to do that even with a blistering speed of economic expansion. Its years and long term and not several quarters.

After so many years of battering from Estrada to Arroyo regimes, we cannot expect an overnight sensation from PNoy. The massive growth will ignite the eventual creation of jobs for each Filipinos. We will strive for it and help our leaders move this country forward. We are on the right track, investors are bullish and in due time industrial revolution will follow. The important thing is that the infrastructures are being constructed left and right. This will prepare our country for more local and foreign industrial investments which will create long lasting jobs.

Ablo suggests better infrastructure and less bureaucracy in setting up businesses will pave the way for more trade:

We do not entertain delusions that changes and vast improvements will happen overnight or even finish during PNoy's term or the next. The OFWs contribution helps but building a stronger middle class who works and lives here in the Philippines will benefit all.

The infrastructures like wider and better roads, railway system that can bring cargoes in, out and through MM and the provinces, less bureaucratic red tape that assist investors to maintain their business here, cheaper electricity, and improved airline and shipping services should be looked into by this present government and set the foundations for their completion. Jobs can and will be generated in achieving these projects and even maintain people here.
