Philippine Coast Guard operatives have eight fishermen whose boat sank after encountering big waves off Occidental Mindoro province.
Over the weekend, the Coast Guard said the fishermen's vessel FB Nydie capsized and sank off Semirara and Ilin Islands on Thursday, January 17.
An initial information reaching the Coast Guard indicated the FB Nydie left Barangay Caminawit in San Jose town and tried to sail towards Semirara fishing grounds despite not having a permit from the Coast Guard. A Coast Guard report said a team conducted search-and-rescue operations and managed to rescue the fishermen at 4 p.m. that day.
The same report added that the rescued fishermen were placed under the custody of the Coast Guard detachment in Semirara and safely returned to their respective residences.
2 missing off Aurora
Meanwhile, search operations are ongoing for two fishermen reported missing off Baler, Aurora.
Citing reports from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management Council (BFARMC), the Coast Guard identified the missing fishermen as Manolo Valiente, 27, and Conrado Novicio, 40.
It said the two went fishing last January 16 but failed to return home.
The Coast Guard in Baler has since advised all fisherfolk, motor boat operators and coastal barangay officials to look for the missing fishermen. — RSJ, GMA News
