An outgoing councilor of Argao town in Cebu province was gunned down Monday, just after attending the local council session.

Police are now tracking down the gunman and his motorcycle-riding companion, who fled after shooting Joaquin Banosong, radio dzBB's Jasmine Baylosis reported Tuesday.

Banosong, 65, succumbed to gunshot wounds in the head and was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.

An initial investigation showed Banosong was about to board his vehicle when the gunman shot him in the head.

The gunman then ran toward a motorcycle where his companion was waiting, then fled.

Police recovered at least three slugs from a cal-.45 pistol at the scene.

Investigators are now trying to determine the motive for the killing, noting politics may not be very likely because the victim's term was ending June 30. —KG, GMA News
