One of 'car rental scam' suspects shot dead in Laguna

One of the suspects in the car rental scam was gunned down on Wednesday afternoon in front of her house in Sta. Rosa, Laguna by men riding in tandem, GMA News' Athena Imperial reported on "Saksi."

Eleanor Constantino Rosales was about to enter the gate to her house but she ran away after noticing the men riding in tandem were approaching her.

There was a brief chase before one of the suspects shot Rosales. After she fell to the ground, the same man shot her again.

The incident was recorded by a CCTV but authorities could not identify the suspects because one was wearing a helmet while another wore a baseball cap.

The motorcycle did not have a plate number.

Police Insp. Arthur Serrano said it cannot be determined how many shots were fired. However, based on the initial investigation conducted by Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO), four spent bullets were recovered at the site.

According to the police, Rosales came from a hearing on a case related to the car rental scam.

It is said that Rosales is the secretary of Rafaela Anunciacion, who is identified as the mastermind of the scam.

The so-called car rental scam modus is done in which car owners are encouraged to have their vehicles rented out in exchange for a monthly fee.

The modus lasts for a few months until the checks used as payment are no longer accepted by the bank. The vehicles are not returned and are pawned without the knowledge of the owners.

The police are conducting an investigation to identify the suspects and determine the motive for the shooting. — BAP, GMA News
