Cargo vessel sinks at Cebu seaport, oil spill feared

A cargo vessel sunk while anchored at the seaport in Talisay, Cebu on Sunday morning.

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said cargo vessel M/V Fortuner, which was carrying steel pellets, started sinking while docked at the Talisay port at around 6:30 a.m.

Tugade said that according to a report by the Philippine Coast Guard, the cargo vessel's sinking came after its crew members discovered a crack on its hull.

The crew members attempted to fix the crack, but water continued to stream into the ship's compartment.

Tugade said the coast guard has sent ships to the Talisay port to prevent an oil spill from the sunken vessel.

All 26 crewmen have been rescued unharmed, he added.

Investigations are ongoing to determine what caused the crack on the vessel's hull. —ALG, GMA News
