Damaged runway caused suspension of operations in Ormoc airport

Operations were suspended at the Ormoc airport on Thursday afternoon after the runway was damaged by the magnitude 6.5 earthquake that jolted the island of Leyte.

"Runway surface damage at Ormoc runway due to earthquake, temporarily suspending operations until further assessment by our engineers who are arriving Ormoc tomorrow morning," Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Director General Jim Sydiongco said.

Meanwhile, classes were already suspended in the cities of Ormoc and Tacloban.

The quake struck 8 kilometers southwest of the town of Jaro at a depth of 2 kilometers beneath the island.

It was felt at Intensity V in Tacloban City and Palo, Leyte, and even as far as Cebu City. — BAP, GMA News
