A suspected Abu Sayyaf member was killed while a soldier was slightly wounded in an encounter in Patikul, Sulu, on Sunday, the military said on Monday.
The encounter happened "amid the conduct of intensified military operation" in Sitio Kan Udang in Barangay Kan Ague at 9:55 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Western Mindanao Command.
"The Western Mindanao Command continuously conduct intensified military operations to deter the different threat groups from creating havoc," said Lieutenant General Arnel Dela Vega, WestMinCom commander.
The operation was also part of the preparations for the midterm elections on Monday, May 13.
The Abu Sayyaf is a small but violent group of Islamic fundamentalists notorious for kidnapping and bombing activities and operates in Sulu and Basilan provinces. —KBK, GMA News
