Davao City allots P50 million to aid students amid COVID-19 pandemic

The Davao City government has earmarked P50 million worth of in-cash and in-kind assistance for its students who will be going back to school amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement, the Davao City government led by mayor Sara Duterte said the P50 million educational assistance program dubbed as Eskwela Davao stands to benefit around 22,000 students whose parents have lost their income since the shutting down of business industries and movement restrictions.

Under the program, 10,000 elementary students will get 1,500 each. Some 6,000 high school students, on the other hand, will get P3,000 each. Meanwhile, 6,000 senior high school students, for their part, will also get P3,000 each.

Norman Baloro, head of Eskwela Davao Program, said the target beneficiaries will include those both in public and private schools and will be granted to one student per family.

Interested applicants will be assessed through these qualifications:

  • a resident of Davao City
  • a bonafide elementary, high school, or senior high school student from any public or private schools in the city
  • has not availed any educational assistance or scholarship offered by the government
  • has not enjoyed any projects, assistance, or program provided by the government during the COVID1-9
  • willing to enroll in the upcoming school year 2020-2021 and
  • whose family’s income or earning has been affected by COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, Baloro also called-on on parents who already applied and qualified for the Work for Davao program to allow other affected families to avail of the Eskwela Davao program.

“If you want your child to avail and support their studies, then you may not avail Work for Davao,” Baloro said. -MDM, GMA News
