Narvacan Mayor Chavit Singson eyes use of satellites for blended learning

The local government of Narvacan, Ilocos Sur is ready for the blended learning scheme amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Chavit Singson said on Monday.

At a Laging Handa press briefing, Singson bared that he has partnered with a telecommunications firm for the installation of satellites to help students have access to learning resources.

"Mayroon kaming ka-partner, Gracia Telecoms na nagbibigay ng mga satellites. So tinesting namin in the remotest barangay of Narvacan. The teachers are happy and tinesting namin to the farthest town, remote areas, walang signal, walang Wi-Fi," Singson said.

"Naglagay lang kami ng satellite. Very successful at napakinggan lahat ng division superintendent... Lahat ng teachers nagustuhan nila. So gusto nilang gamitin region-wide. Pero kako ipaalam niyo muna kay Secretary Briones para alam niya itong programang ito," he added.

Singson said he wants to discuss the matter with Education Secretary Leonor Briones as this may also be applied in other parts of the country.

He noted that this is cheaper and that students and teachers will not be charged in using these satellites.

"Hindi kami magnenegosyo dito. Tutulong lang sa ating bansa," Singson said.

Briones earlier said face-to-face classes will not be held until a COVID-19 vaccine is available.

The opening of classes for school year 2020-2021 is scheduled on August 24. —KG, GMA News
