Steam plumes, vertical jets, water spouts spotted at Taal Volcano crater

Steam plumes, vertical jets, and water spouts were spotted at Taal Volcano's main crater on Saturday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

Some of the plumes rose to about 1.5 kilometers before drifting off to the southwest

The activity was due to cool air or rainwater making contact with the hot volcanic fluids on the crater's surface.

"There have been no observations of such activity during the hot daytime periods of upwelling," the PHIVOLCS added.

Meanwhile, the Taal Volcano Network did not detect any volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours, though low-level background tremors have persisted since April 8, 2021.

Alert Level 2 (Increased Unrest) was maintained over Taal Volcano, but elevated unrest has been recurring and volcano conditions remain unstable. — DVM, GMA News
