DILG condemns attack on health workers, police in Leyte

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Tuesday denounced the attack allegedly by communist rebels on health workers and cops in Palo, Leyte last week.

In a statement, DILG Secretary Eduardo Año hit the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) for targeting even the frontliners of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The CPP-NPA-NDF’s height of insensitivity, callousness, and opportunism knows no bounds,” he said.

After the incident, Año instructed the Philippine National Police (PNP) to assign more cops to COVID-19 vaccination operations to maintain peace and order.

The PNP said communist rebels on July 27 ambushed a convoy of Calbayog City Police Station cops and Calbayog City Health Office workers who were on their way to fetch vaccines in Tacloban City.

According to the PNP, the communist rebels fired at the vehicle and used an improvised explosive device.

No one was reported hurt during the incident, the PNP said.

PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar ordered an all-out pursuit operation against the perpetrators.

DILG Undersecretary and anti-insurgency task force spokesperson Jonathan Malaya encouraged the public to immediately report to local authorities any sightings of communist rebels in their areas. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
