Tourists and residents who took shelter at a sports complex in Siargao island during the onslaught of Typhoon Odette screamed in horror when the cyclone's winds tore off the metal roof of the gym like flimsy foil.

According to Dano Tincungco's report on "24 Oras", the children and pregnant women were among the evacuees at the Dapa Sports Complex.

"'Yong hangin parang ipo-ipong dumaan na palibot-libot. Tapos maraming mga baby at buntis," Nadia Montayre, a tourist said.

Montayre said some hid inside the toilet because the wind was too strong.

"Pumunta kami ng CR, doon kami nagtatago kasi 'yong hangin, dadalhin ka talaga ng hangin 'pag lumabas ka," Montayre said.

Odette left various pieces of debris after its onslaught.

More than 1.8 million people have been affected by the onslaught of Odette, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said on Monday.

The areas most affected by Odette were northeastern Mindanao, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, and Palawan. —NB, GMA News
