Iloilo City to adopt 4-day workweek for city hall employees— mayor

Iloilo City is set to adopt the recommendation of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) to shorten the workweek into four days for its city hall employees to help conserve energy, Mayor Jerry Treñas said Thursday.

Treñas made the announcement following the suggestion of NEDA chief and Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua for the government to impose a four-day workweek to conserve energy and help the public cope with series of big time fuel price hikes.

According to Treñas, the implementation of such work policy in Iloilo City will start two weeks from now.

This time frame would then grant the city’s employees the time to adjust their schedules both at work and at home.

“In order to help our employees cope with the present increases of fuel, the city will start adopting the 4-day work week as suggested by NEDA chief Karl Chua starting the week after next,” he said in a statement.

Treñas said the local city government will also look at other alternatives to help reduce energy consumption in the city.

“We are also going to make use of our modern jeeps to ferry our employees from the district plazas to the City Hall and back everyday. Other measures recommended for energy conservation will be seriously studied,” he added.
