Heavy rains cause flooding in Sarangani, Davao de Oro, other areas

Several areas in the country got flooded on Tuesday after heavy rains poured due to the intertropical convergence zone and a low pressure area (LPA).

Sarangani

In Sarangani province, it was almost zero visibility in the towns of Maasim and Maitum due to the heavy rainfall, according to a report on GMA News' Unang Balita on Wednesday.

Motorists had to slow down to avoid accidents.

In the town of Alabel, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office monitored flood-prone areas.

Floodwaters entered some houses in Barangay Ladol and residents were evacuated.

In Barangay Kawas, meanwhile, floodwaters were chest-deep. Six "purok" were flooded.

The national highway was also flooded.

Seventy families were affected, and the local government unit sent assistance.

In the municipality of Malapatan, motorists were stranded as roads got flooded.

Davao de Oro and Davao del Sur

In Compostela, Davao de Oro, floodwaters were waist-deep and entered some houses, according to a separate report on Unang Balita.

Residents were evacuated, but evacuation was difficult in areas where floodwaters were reportedly neck-deep.

In Matanao, Davao del Sur, some houses also got flooded after a brook overflowed its banks.

No one was hurt, authorities said.

Southern Leyte and Aurora

Meanwhile, in San Ricardo, Southern Leyte, residents of Barangay Saud were warned of the possibility of landslides due to the heavy rains, according to a separate report on Unang Balita.

In Casiguran, Aurora, fisherfolk did not venture out to sea due to the bad weather.

PAGASA said the LPA located southeast of Davao City will bring scattered to widespread rain showers and thunderstorms over Palawan and Mindanao on Wednesday, and flash floods or landslides may result.

Visayas will also have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the LPA with possible flash floods or landslides during moderate to at times heavy rains.

Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon and Quezon will have cloudy skies with rains due to the northeasterly windflow.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains due to the northeasterly windflow. —KG, GMA News
