Death toll in Baybay City, Leyte due to Agaton climbs to 48 —LGU

A total of 48 fatalities have been reported so far in Baybay City, Leyte due to the onslaught of Tropical Depression Agaton (international name: Megi) as of Wednesday morning, a local official said.

Baybay City information officer Marissa Cano confirmed to GMA News Online that 48 deaths were recorded by the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO).

In its report, the CDRRMO said the fatalities were reported from the following barangays: Mailhi (14), Kantagnos (10), Bunga (12), San Agustin (3), Maypatag (2), Pangasugan (2), Candadam (1), Poblacion Zone 21 (1), Higcop (1), Can-ipa (1), and Igang (1).

At least 27 people were still missing including 21 in Barangay Bunga, five in Barangay Can-ipa and one in Barangay Guadalupe.

A total of 105 people were injured, of which 53 were admitted in hospitals, 51 were outpatients, and one outpatient from the Philippine Coast Guard, the CDRRMO said.

Over 4,000 residents were evacuated due to the threat of Agaton, it added.

The CDDRMO said floods of up to two feet were reported in low-lying areas and landslide incidents in barangays Gaas Section, Villa Solidaridad, Kan-ipa, Amguhan, Punta, Kantagnos, Bunga, Mailhi, Bubon, and Gacat.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), 37 of the reported fatalities were due to the landslides in Baybay City.

Baybay City has been placed under a state of calamity due to Agaton's effects. —KG, GMA News
