5 barangays in Zamboanga City placed in 'red zone' due to African swine fever

Five barangays in Zamboanga City were placed by authorities in the "red zone" due to confirmed cases of African swine fever among hogs, according to a report on 24 Oras Weekend on Sunday.

The five barangays are Mangusu, Curuan, Manicahan, Bunguiao and Pasonanca.

Zamboanga City Veterinarian Dr. Mario Arriola said culling of hogs within a 500-meter radius of the five barangays is being conducted.

To increase the supply of hogs in the city, the Zamboanga City Hog Raisers Association is teaching residents on the proper way of hog raising while ensuring sanitation.

The association has a program in coordination with the Department of Agriculture which gives 10 mother pigs to residents in accordance with guidelines set by the association and the Office of the City Veterinarian. —KG, GMA News
