Helmsman fell asleep causing passenger vessel to run aground in Iloilo —PCG

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Wednesday said passenger vessel MV Filipinas Cebu ran aground in Concepcion, Iloilo on Tuesday because a helmsman, the one tasked to steer the ship, fell asleep.

In an update, the PCG said this information came from the master of the passenger vessel. The PCG advised the vessel's master to file a marine protest at the PCG Station in Iloilo.

On Tuesday, MV Filipinas Cebu of the Cokaliong Shipping Lines ran aground

at 12:08 a.m. in the waters between Igbon Island and Agho Island while heading to Cebu.

MV Filipinas Cebu departed from Iloilo at 7:14 p.m. on Monday.

Captain Alexander Wahing said the 223 passengers and 38 crew onboard including him were safe and not injured, according to the PCG.

MV Filipinas Cebu’s sister vessel MV Filipinas Nasipit ferried the passengers to their port of destination, according to the PCG.

After the assessment of its Marine Environmental Protection Unit, the PCG said there are no traces of oil spill from the incident.

The crew inspected the hull for possible ingress of seawater and the inspection yielded negative results, the PCG said. —KG, GMA News
