Two Coast Guard officers to help out as teachers on Pag-asa Island

Two Philippine Coast Guard officers, CG Ensign Jev Latic and CG Ensign Arnel Gomora, both licensed teachers with Bachelor of Elementary Education degrees, will be helping out as teachers on Kalayaan town's Pag-asa Island in Palawan when school opens on Monday-August 22.

Latic is PCG Station Kalayaan's station commander while Gomora is the deputy station commander.

According to PCG District Palawan commander Commodore Rommel Supangan, Pag-asa Island had only one teacher who handled all the students from Grades 1 to 6.

“Nakita natin yung pangangailangan ng karagdagang guro sa Isla. Dito nga sa mainland, damang-dama natin yung pinagdadaanang hirap ng mga guro para sa pagbubukas ng klase, papaano pa kaya sa Isla na si Teacher Realyn Limbo lang ang nag-aasikaso ng lahat,” said Supangan in a PCG Facebook post.

(We saw the need for more teachers on the island. If teachers go through difficulties here on the mainland, how much more difficult could it be for Teacher Realyn Limbo who has to see to all these students on the island?)

“Kaya nakipag-ugnayan tayo kaya Mayor Roberto Del Mundo ng  para makatulong sa pangangailangan ng paaralan, ni Teacher Realyn, at ng mga estudyante.”

(That's why we met with Kalayaan Mayor Roberto Del Mundo so we could help address the needs of the school, Teacher Realyn, and the students.)

Also, with the help of Operation Brotherhood (OB) Community Foundation Inc., the PCG-OB Community Center was established.

The center was supplied with varied learning materials and other items that can help in the education of the children.

“Simula palang ito. Marami pa tayong gagawin para mapagbuti ang pag-aaral ng mga kabataan sa Isla. Sa tulong ng PCG Auxiliary, magagawa natin lahat ito," said Supangan.
