Magnitude 6.4 quake jolts Abra

A magnitude 6.4 quake jolted Lagayan, Abra on Tuesday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

Based on its earthquake bulletin, the epicenter of the quake was seven kilometers northwest of Lagayan, Abra. It occurred at 10:59 p.m.

The tectonic earthquake also had a depth of 11 kilometers, according to PHIVOLCS.

Among reported intensities were felt in the following:

  • Intensity V - Bangued, Boliney, Bucay, Bucloc, Daguioman, Danglas, Dolores, Lacub, Lagangilang, Lagayan, Langiden, Licuan-Baay, Luba, Malibcong, Manabo, Peñarrubia, Pidigan, Pilar, Sallapadan, San Isidro, San Juan, San Quintin, Tayum, Tineg, Tubo, and Villaviciosa, Abra; Conner, Apayao; La Trinidad, Benguet; Rizal, Kalinga; Alilem, Banayoyo, Bantay, Burgos, Cabugao, City of Candon, Cervantes, Galimuyod, Gregorio del Pilar, Lidlidda, Magsingal, Nagbukel, Narvacan, Quirino, Salcedo, San Emilio, San Esteban, San Ildefonso, San Juan, San Vicente, Santa, Santa Catalina, Santa Cruz, Santa Lucia, Santa Maria, Santiago, Santo Domingo, Sigay, Sinait, Sugpon, Suyo, Tagudin, and City of Vigan, Ilocos Sur; Bacnotan, Balaoan, Bauang, and Caba, La Union; Abulug, Allacapan, Amulung, Aparri, Baggao, Claveria, Lal-Lo, Lasam, Peñablanca, Tuao, and Tuguegarao City, Cagayan

PHIVOLCS said aftershocks are expected following the quake.

The agency initially reported that a magnitude 6.7 quake hit Tingeg, Abra.

Meanwhile, no tsunami threat was detected in the country following the quake, according to PHIVOLCS.

No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data.

"However, earthquakes of this size may generate unusual sea level disturbances that may be observed along coasts near earthquake epicenter of Abra province," it added.

The Abra provincial government posted on social media, Maidagadag ti panagannad, panagkalma, ken panag-alerto. (Vigilance is urged, calmness and alertness.)

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC), on the other hand, said their volunteers are now monitoring their areas of responsibility.
