Maundy Thursday tourists in Boracay reached 18,000 —police

The number of tourists that arrived in Boracay on Maundy Thursday alone hit 18,000, according to the local police on Sunday.

In a Super Radyo dzBB interview, Malay, Aklan Police chief Police Lieutenant Colonel Don de Dios said that despite the hotel occupancy in the island reaching around 80-90%, the situation there is still generally peaceful.

“According sa ating tourism dito, it’s around 80-90% ang occupancy natin dito. Then most of the hotels na nandito ‘yung malalaki, fully booked lahat. Kaya medyo makapal ang tao natin,” he said.

(According to our tourism [office], it's around 80-90% occupied here. Most of the big hotels here are fully booked. So our tourists are quite a lot.)

“Nu'ng isang araw natin dito, nu'ng Thursday, ang total arrival natin for one day is 18,000,” he added.

(On Thursday, our total [tourist] arrival for one day was 18,000.)

De Dios said tourists are starting to go home now, but the bulk of them are expected to leave the island on Monday, by the end of the long weekend.

He, however, assured the public of continued security and safety services for tourists since the local police declared full alert in Boracay on March 31. —KG, GMA Integrated News
