Kanlaon Volcano emits 200-meter ash amid unrest

State seismologists have released a time-lapse footage of Kanlaon Volcano emitting ash that lasted almost 30 minutes on Friday morning amid its ongoing unrest.

The footage was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) between 7:01 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.

“This event generated grayish plumes that rose 200 meters above the crater before drifting west as recorded by the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory - Canlaon City IP camera,” the PHIVOLCS noted.

Alert Level 3 remains hoisted over Kanlaon, which means there is a high level of volcanic unrest.

Possible hazards from the volcano include sudden explosive eruption, lava flow or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density current, rockfall, and lahars during heavy rains.

The volcano had an explosive eruption on December 9, prompting PHIVOLCS to raise the Alert Level from 2 to 3.

Evacuation of residents from the six-kilometer radius around the volcano’s summit is recommended. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
