Panukalang batas vs pang-aabuso sa mga matatanda nais palakasin ng DSWD

Isinusulong ng Department of Social Welfare and Development ang ilang mga panukalang naglalayong palakasin pa ang panukalang batas na nagproprotekta ng mga magulang, senior citizens at mga nakatatanda laban sa mga problemang pinansyal dahil sa pag-abanduna sa kanila ng kanilang mga anak o apo. Ayon sa news release na inilabas ng DSWD noong Miyerkules, sinabing nagsumite ang ahensya ng mga rekomendasyon sa House Committee on Population and Family Relations. Binanggit ng House Bill 2295 o “The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents, Senior Citizens, and Elderly Act of 2010,” na iniwan ng ilang mga anak ang kanilang mga magulang dahil sa mga makasariling dahilan. Kabilang sa mga panukala na balak idagdag ng DWSD sa panukalang batas ang mga sunusuno:

• provision for social workers to handle the cases of families involved to assess the relationships and capabilities of the individuals before the filing of cases;                     
• have the Public Attorney’s Office provide legal services on court-related complaints to be filed by elderly and senior citizens; at
• a provision to specify who may file for support in behalf of the parent or the elderly/senior citizen such as: DSWD and local social workers or at least two concerned responsible persons residing in the same city or municipality as the parent or elderly/senior citizen
