Man driving U-Haul truck injures eight in New York

NEW YORK - At least eight people were injured Monday when a man driving a U-Haul truck erratically struck pedestrians in the Brooklyn borough of New York, authorities said.

New York Police Department chief Keechant Sewell told reporters there was no indication the incident was terror-related or that the man hit the people intentionally.

Officers first stopped the driver around 10:50 am (1550 GMT) in the Bay Ridge neighborhood after he had hit some of the people.

He then drove away, striking some more people as police gave chase. The driver was finally stopped and arrested.

Seven civilians and one police officer were injured. Two of the people were in critical condition, she added.

An NYPD spokesperson said three of the injured had been on mopeds.

"We know a very limited amount about our subject at this time," said Sewell, adding that an investigation was ongoing.

She said that officers had seven separate locations to investigate. -- Agence France-Presse
