Persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Puerto Princesa City marked the start of Lent with the observance of Ash Wednesday.

This included the imposition of ashes and prayers led by jail personnel and lay volunteers.

Regional information officer Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo said the 40-day Lenten season inside the facility will include religious activities, such as Eucharistic celebrations and confessions to help deepen the faith of PDLs.

Anglo reminded inmates that it is never too late to repent and return to God, regardless of their situation.

He also emphasized self-inflicted harm as a form of penance is strictly prohibited inside the jail.

“The act of inflicting bodily harm as a form of penance during Lent is prohibited in jails,” Anglo said.
