The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Cebu City distributed survival whistles in barangays for emergency purposes, following the series of ground shaking, such as the deadly offshore earthquake that struck northern Cebu on September 30, 2025.
The BFP has pointed out that survival whistles may be a simple, humble device but it is essential during emergency situations as these are loud and effective to call for help in an emergency such as when trapped, or buried in the rubble, that requires less effort than shouting.
Three long blasts of a survival whistle mean a distress call, based on international standards.
At least 100 survival whistles were distributed by the Cebu City Fire Office to Barangay Hipodromo, among others.
According to SFO3 Wendell Villanueva, spokesperson of BFP Cebu City spokesperson, said that appropriate use of the whistles leads to quick response during emergencies.
The BFP in Cebu City has focused tightly in conducting earthquake drills and emergency preparedness at barangays.
