The shores of Magsingal, Ilocos Sur came alive as 80 boats from various provinces roared in Bangkarera 2024.

Participants came from various provinces, including Zamboanga, Samar, Quezon Province, Mindoro, Pampanga, Batangas, Bulacan, and regions in Ilocos Sur.

The boats in the 'Tura-Tura' category had modified engines that allowed them to reach 100 to 120 kilometers per hour.

"Malalaki talaga yung makina nila [at] malalakas sa laot, tumatakbo sila ng mga 100 to 120 kilometers per hour," Rex Quilala, Chairman of the Committee on Bangkarero, said.

Jomar Santos, a participant from Bulacan and Zambales, led the defending champion team.

According to Santos, they have competed in over 100 competitions since 2013. He said that Bangkarera should be recognized as a legitimate sport for fishermen.

The event also featured the 'Panaltagan' category where traditional fishing service boats were used.

The Coast Guard, medical personnel, and the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMC) were on standby during the event.

"Sa buong Pilipinas, year-round na may nagpapalaro ng ganito," Quilala said.

As a coastal province, the Ilocos Sur Provincial Government aims to establish the province as a premier venue for such competitions to contribute to its tourism.
