A 16-year-old athlete died after he was pinned down by a football goal post at a school in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.
The Grade 11 student was about to begin training for long-distance track and field when he reportedly climbed up the goal post and hung from there. However, the goal post fell and brought the student down with it, pinning him to the ground in his face.
According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), the school has pledged to assist with expenses related to the tragedy.
The child’s mother is calling for accountability.
The school is yet to issue a statement, as of this writing, but the Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division of Laoag City said it has called for a debriefing session for players and coaches to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
"We have already conducted a meeting and initial debriefing with coaches, trainers, and supervising officials to strengthen the safety measures for our athletes. A psychological debriefing will also be done to address the traumatic effects of the incident to the concerned learners, coaches, and trainers," the statement reads.
