The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) recorded a 48°C heat index in Dagupan City on April 26, 2024, the highest since the city began registering at least 43°C since April 22.

The same heat index is forecasted for Dagupan over the weekend, on April 27 and 28.

From 43°C on April 22, the heat index in the city escalated to 47°C the following day until April 25.

This searing temperature falls under the danger category, signaling potential risks of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke with prolonged exposure to the intense heat.

As the heatwave persists, PAGASA advised the following measures to prevent heat-related illnesses:

  • Limit the time spent outdoors
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid tea, coffee, soda, and liquor
  • Wear umbrellas, hats, and sleeved clothing outdoors; and,
  • Schedule heavy-duty activities for the beginning or end of the day, when it’s cooler

When a person succumbs to the heat, PAGASA recommended the following emergency responses:

  • Move the person to a shady spot, lie him/her down with legs elevated. If conscious, have them sip cool water.
  • Remove clothing, apply cool water on the skin and provide ventilation
  • Apply ice packs to the armpits, wrists, ankles, and groin; and,
  • Bring them to a hospital immediately.
