A university in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte was placed on lockdown for about an hour following an incident involving two female college students who allegedly figured in a scuffle inside the ladies restroom, which resulted in a gunshot.

The confrontation reportedly stemmed from a misunderstanding over money. One of the students was with a gun.

No one was hit by the bullet but one of the two students sustained injuries from the scuffle.

“Allegedly, ang motibo ng suspect natin ay, magbarkada raw itong dalawa, then allegedly, kinuha ng suspect ‘yung ATM ng classmate niya. So a certain amount of money [ay] nai-withdraw — then ‘yun ‘yung dahilan. Luckily, hindi naman natamaan ‘yung biktima natin [ng bala], although may sugat siya [kasi] inagaw daw yung baril,” PCPT. Carlo Rabago, Investigation Officer from the Laoag City Police Station, said.

Authorities are now investigating how the student managed to slip a caliber .45 pistol into the campus, and how she got hold of the firearm.

The student had surrendered to the police and brought the gun with her.

Authorities said she may face charges for attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms.

The university administration assured full cooperation in the investigation.

“For now, the administration is beefing up its security with regard to the incident. It is an isolated incident because it is the first time that [it] happened in the city and in the province; at hindi natin ine-expect [na] lahat na mangyayari ito; pero nevertheless, we are stepping up on that front,” Mr. Jon Oscar Lois "Spider" Rodas, the Public Relations and Information Officer of the university, said.
