A 63-year-old man died while his 58-year-old wife who was riding pillion on their motorcycle was hurt when a trailer truck hit them, toppled over, and pinned them to the ground at past 5 a.m. on May 19, 2024 in Barangay Naalad, City of Naga, south Cebu Province.

The 33-year-old driver of the trailer truck identified as Denmil Lumayno, a resident of Barangay Pakigne in Minglanilla town, said that while he was maneuvering a road bend along the Naga-Uling road bound for Toledo City in the midwest section of Cebu, the cargo binder came loose.

The weight of the cargo, steel bars mostly, tipped the truck over, he said.

Lumayno admitted he felt sleepy prior to the incident.

“So medyo kuwang gyud kami sa tulog tungod sa pulaw. Medyo ana jud kay air-con ang unit (Medyo kulang po sa tulog dahil nagpuyat. Tapos aircondition ang unit],” Lumayno said.

He was detained at the City of Naga Police Station. As of posting time, the family of the victims has not issued a statement yet.

Charges for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide, physical injuries and damage to property will be filed against the suspect.
