The driver of the cement mixer truck that figured in a head-on collision in Leganes town, Iloilo was pronounced dead at the hospital, along with the truck boy of the wing van.
The driver was identified as Fermin Gamarcha, Jr.
The other casualty was identified as Niño Miranda, wing van truck helper.
Both sustained fatal wounds on the head due to the impact of the collision.
The incident happened in Barangay Calaboa, Leganes town in the Province of Iloilo at past 11 a.m. on September 10, 2024.
According to the Leganes Municipal Police Station, the wing van driver identified as Ryan Ramos and the cement mixer truck helper identified as Joemar Sonza sustained injuries but are already in stable condition at the hospital, as of posting time.
Police investigation had it that a wheel of the wing van exploded. The vehicle traveled on counterflow, or in the opposite lane, and rammed into the cement mixer truck from the opposite direction.
The mixer truck was from Oton town and was headed for Banate town carrying cement; while the wing van was from the Province of Aklan going to Iloilo City loaded with beverages, of sorts.
Police believe that the wing van was moving speedily prior to the incident.
Daylen, the wife of Gamarcha, said it is tough to bear the news of the incident.
According to Daylen, her husband is an industrious man and a responsible husband, and father to their child.
Following the accident, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) 6 has reiterated that motorists should be responsible in checking the condition of their vehicles prior to traveling.
LTO 6 said that motorists should check the battery, water, brakes, air, fuel, engine, tires, among others, of their vehicle.
If a vehicle is owned by a company, LTO 6 said, such as in the case of this particular incident, there should be proper checking procedure before the vehicle hits the road.
LTO 6 further pointed out that motorists must observe the 80-kilometer-per-hour speed limit imposed on highways.
The respective family of the victims is set to meet the owner of the wing van on Friday, September 13, 2024.
