The rise of magma to a higher portion of Kanlaon Volcano’s vent is an indication of a 'possible eruption,' according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
Photographs of the summit crater of Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island captured images of superheated plume.
PHIVOLCS confirmed that the superheated plume is possibly due to magma, not crater glow.
“Posible talagang galing ito sa magma. Makikita naman sa ating IP [Internet Protocol] cameras,” said Perly Sianson, science research specialist at Kanlaon Volcano Observatory.
This is not the first time, though, that superheated plume was spotted on the summit crater, PHIVOLCS said.
Superheated plume was observed already in the past months, PHIVOLCS added.
