Fishermen in Dagupan City have been unable to go out to sea for nearly a week due to big waves along the coast.
Many have resorted to guarding rental cottages at Tondaligan Beach to earn a living.
Marvin Paras, a fisherman, said he has not set sail for three days, while others have been unable to fish for even longer.
“Ako tatlong araw nang hindi lumalaot, ‘yung iba mas matagal na. Nakakatakot ang alon, mahirap din kung ipilit namin, madisgrasya pa kami,” he said.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said no gale warning has been raised in Pangasinan.
However, the northeast monsoon (Amihan) continues to trigger big waves.
“Pagsapit ng hapon, malalakas ulit ang alon. Normally, mataas ang alon talaga kapag Amihan,” Engr. Jose Estrada Jr., chief meteorologist of PAGASA-Dagupan City, said.
PAGASA expect sea conditions to improve by March as the northeast monsoon weakens, allowing fishermen to return to work safely.
