Contrary to information that first surfaced, the man who was found floating dead at a river in Cagayan de Oro City did not jump off the bridge with his lover to avoid an alleged robbery.

This was clarified by the Cagayan de Oro City Police (COCPO) on Friday, February 14, 2025, following investigation.

“Napamatud-an nga wala gyud tulis nga nahitabo ug wala katong giingong manag-uyab nga miambak sa tulay sa maong dike kay aron maglikay atong tulis. Wala’y nahitabo nga susamang panghitabo sa gikaingon nga istorya,” said COCPO Spokesperson, Capt. Emilita Simon.

COCPO said the story about the lovers jumping off the bridge to avoid robbers was allegedly made up by the dead man’s ex-girlfriend.

The ex-girlfriend reportedly admitted that she was with the man before the latter fell into the river due to drunkenness.

Police said, quoting the woman’s mother, the ex-girlfriend reportedly has a history of mental problems, which may have affected her statements. Her statements to the police were reportedly inconsistent.

“Napamatud-an nga wala gyud kay ang iyang statement nagkalahi-lahi man. Mao kani nga gi-istorya sa ginikanan sa alleged nga babae nga kauban nga naa kini deperensya sa panghuna-huna maong bisan unsa na lang iyang gipang-istorya,” Simon said.

Police reminded the public to avoid areas that will put them in danger, especially when they drink liquor.

“Mao kani ang atong gihangyo sa katawhan ilabi na kaning mag-inom nga kung mahimo dili kita mupwesto sa delikado o mangitngit nga lugar,” Simon said.

Investigation into the incident continues.
