The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Central Committee on Kontra Bigay has issued show cause orders against three candidates for municipal councilor in the Province of Iloilo due to alleged vote buying.
The three candidates are from Dumangas town, according to Atty. Reinier Layson, provincial election supervisor of COMELEC-Iloilo in an interview with GMA Super Radyo Iloilo.
According to Layson, COMELEC Central Office issued the show cause order based on direct sending of complaints with attached screenshots of social media posts that acknowledged sponsorship done by candidates which COMELEC did not however specify.
As of this writing, the office of the Provincial COMELEC is awaiting a directive from COMELEC Central in relation to the election concern.
COMELEC has kept on reminding candidates and the public against vote buying and vote selling based on Comelec Resolution Number 11104. Acts prohibited include direct or indirect giving of money or goods in exchange for votes, digital transaction via online banking or electronic wallet transfers, giving away of groceries, health cards, and discount vouchers; house-to-house campaign involving distribution of giveaways, medical missions or distribution of "ayuda" (aid) with political branding, excessive number of poll watchers and destruction of election materials, among other violations to election laws.
