One died while five others were injured after a portion of the second floor of an edifice at an industrial park in Lapu-Lapu City collapsed.
The incident happened days prior to World Day for Safety and Health at Work celebration.
The body of the 50-year-old construction worker has already been taken home in Barangay Tipolo, Mandaue City for the wake.
The victim was among other workers on duty at the second floor of the edifice being constructed when a portion collapsed past 11 p.m. on April 26, 2025.
However, the family of the victim refused an interview with GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak.
As of this writing, five wounded workers are recuperating at the hospital after suffering from a fall from the second floor of the building.
According to Police Lt. Col. Christian Torres, spokesperson of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office, they learned of the incident from the management of the hospital, as the contractor of the said edifice failed to coordinate with them.
Torres said that the incident happened at 11:20 p.m. on April 26, 2025 but they received information from the hospital at 11:30 a.m., or already in the late morning of Sunday, April 27, 2025.
The news team also tried to reach the contractor for comment but was barred from getting inside the Cebu Light Industrial Park.
According to the Department of Labor and Employment 7 Director, Atty. Roy Buenafe, they have investigated the incident.
On Monday, April 28, 2025, DOLE 7 led the celebration of World Day for Safety and Health at Work wherein Buenafe emphasized the significance of the role of safety officers in each office or business establishment.
Buenafe said that despite the strict implementation of DOLE on the said policy, several companies have downplayed the importance of safety officers such as construction companies.
Based on 2024 data, a total of 111 workers in Central Visayas met accidents while at work.
DOLE 7 has encouraged companies to use Artificial Intelligence and digital tools at work, such as drones especially in the construction industry to help survey probable work hazards.
Meanwhile, Engr. Perla Amar, head of the Office of Building Official (OBO) and City Engineer's Office of Lapu-Lapu City, disclosed that the affected locator has not secured a building permit from the city as the industrial park has its own building official.
